The gods take the giants’ magic away
In the same jotun legend, the Six Gods grow unhappy with the giants and strip magic from the jotun and norn, parcelling it out to their favored races and casting the giants into a long darkness. Priory scholars instead blame the jotun’s own civil wars.
In Thrulnn the Lost’s account, the Age of Giants ended when the gods grew unhappy with the jotun, took their magic away, and handed it out in measured portions to their favorite races. The giants’ confusion was great, and the betrayal broke them: the jotun kings, already fighting among themselves, lost the power that had made them lords of the world.
This is jotun myth, not settled history. Durmand Priory scholars are skeptical of the whole tale. In their reckoning the jotun lost their magic not to the gods but to their own endless civil wars, in which their mages and lorekeepers were the first to die, and some note the age of jotun magic may even pre-date the human gods and the Bloodstone entirely. Whichever telling is true, the giants never recovered the glory they once held, surviving only as savages amid the citadels of their ancestors.
