The gods take the giants’ magic away
Grown unhappy with the giants, the Six Gods strip magic from the jotun and norn and hand it in measured bites to their favored races — ending the Age of Giants and casting the jotun into a long darkness.
The Age of Giants ended when magic was stolen from the giants by the gods. In Thrulnn the Lost’s account, the gods grew unhappy with the jotun, took magic away from them, and handed it out in measured portions to their favorite races. The giants’ confusion was great, and the betrayal broke them: the jotun kings, already fighting among themselves, lost the power that had made them lords of the world.
From that day the jotun have slid deeper and deeper into darkness — Thrulnn likens it to sinking into quicksand with nothing to pull them free. Some Priory scholars hold that the age of jotun magic may even pre-date the coming of the human gods and the creation of the Bloodstone; whichever telling is true, the giants never recovered the glory they once held, surviving only as savages amid the citadels of their ancestors.
