Around 10,000 BE the Elder Dragons stir into their most recent awakening before the modern age, a rising jotun stargazers later matched against the stars and tied to the disappearance of the Great Giants.

The GW2 Timeline gives roughly 10,000 BE as the suspected beginning of the last rising of the Elder Dragons before the events of Guild Wars 2 — "over ten thousand years ago" that the dragons "last returned to their slumber," in the words of the dwarf scholar Ogden Stonehealer. As with every dragonrise, the awakening transformed the land with corruption as the dragons gorged themselves on the world's magic.

Ancient jotun discovered that the dragons' awakenings coincided with the birth of new stars, inscribing the pattern on their great monument stones so that the next dragonrise could be predicted. Centuries later the asura researcher Varra Skylark matched a jotun "sky-sweeper" against the heavens and found a stellar match with the last time the dragons awoke — around ten thousand years ago — leading her to conclude the Elder Dragons may have been responsible for the extinction of the giganticus lupicus.
