The gods favor, then fear, the giants
In an unverified jotun legend, the Six Gods once favored the giants, granting the jotun and norn magic and knowledge of mechanical and magical things, but came to fear that their rising power might one day be turned against the gods themselves. Priory scholars dispute the tale.
This survives only in the telling of the jotun storyteller Thrulnn the Lost, and the Guild Wars 2 Wiki cautions that its accuracy cannot be confirmed and that no other source corroborates it. In his account, the gods once favored the giants, the jotun: they gave them magic and blessed them with knowledge of mechanical and magical things. So great did the jotun and norn become that the other races looked up to them, and the giants were "gaining on the gods" themselves, an ascent that, in the telling, bred a dread that turned the gods against them.
Two cautions come with the tale. Durmand Priory scholars reject Thrulnn’s version: in their reckoning the jotun undid themselves through pride and endless civil war, losing their magic not because the gods took it but because their own mages and lorekeepers were the first to fall in that fighting. And the legend sits awkwardly against the recorded timeline, which does not place the Six Gods’ first arrival on Tyria until far later, at the Artesian Waters in the Age of Beasts. Read it as jotun myth, not firm history.
